October 5, 1961 Letter Herman To Parents

First a note to say that I have been a lot busier now that I am back at work everyday. I didn’t realize how busy I would be. In fact, after being gone for 5 1/2 months (officially my last day at work was March 16), it took me until the end of last week to finally get everything all caught up. That was a crazy 4 weeks that left me with no energy for blogging. But, things have calmed down and I am all caught up, so I should be able to focus more on some genealogy. Back to the family letters.

Dear Dick and Dad:-

We received your card today and was glad to hear you had a safe trip home. As I read your card I couldn’t help but think how happy you must have been when your friends started coming in the minute they knew you were home. It makes Ruth and I very happy to know that they care and we are very grateful to them for adopting you. I feel they are doing something for us that we can not do for ourselves, you being there and us being here. We know you are in good hands.

I just got back from Grand Chapter R.A.M. held in Toledo, Al Maddox, Bill Henry and myself left yesterday morning (Wed) at 4AM and arrived back

[page 2]
home 6:10PM this evening. I thought the meetings were very interesting and I learned a lot about R.A.M. I’m sorry I’ve never taken the time to attend one of their meetings before because I believe any pearson going through the line should get this inspiration early n the line. It would help so much to improve your knowledge and prepare for you year in the East.

I can say one thing with all due respect to the men, I think they could take a page out of the Eastern Star Book as far a knowing and being able to conduct a grand Chapter session, it doesn’t have the beauty and dignity that is associated with an Eastern Star meeting.

Ruth is attending her “Rebecka” meeting tonight, their inspection and I believe election of officers.

[page 3]
The weather here has been fair and warmer since you went home, I hope we will still have some summer weather. We had a heavy frost the next morning after you left so maybe you call it Indian Summer.

We took Lydia and Aunt Elsie to the lake with us last weekend, we had a good time and I know they did too because they acted like a couple of High School girls. I know it was good for both of them. Although we didn’t get to go fishing because of the high winds we did get to take them a nice ride in the boat late Sunday afternoon when the winds died down.

[page 4[]
We took them out and around Kelley’s Island. I think Ralph and Lucille are going this week end, and I expect we’ll be pulling the boat out of the water about the next week end. I sure hate to lay it up as I’ve just begin to get the “feel’ of it. Be nice if we could just load it on a trailer and haul it down to your place. Well I’ve run off at the head enough for tonight, be well close for now.

Love Ruth & H.O.

Dear Dick & Dad:-

We were surprised to hear you guys were leaving Cummins Lake so soon. It just doesn’t seem like the summer has passed. In fact we’ve had very little summer weather, not over 2 weeks of real summer weather all season. I don’t imagine yours has been any better. We had a nice week end at the lake over Labor Day the first in over a month. Ralph and Lucile were up with us, we had a real good time. Caught 20 perch Sunday and 30 Monday. They didn’t go any place for vacation, on account of her father being in Hospital so long. He is doing real good now but still has another operation to face in the very near future.

[page 2]
Lucile started to work at the School, helping in the Cafeteria. she applied for the job about 5 years ago and just now got the job. She gets $125.00 per month for five days 8AM till 2P.M. its much better than working at Shadwicks General Store, gives her week ends at home, etc.

We haven’t called Burch about going down to Parkersburg with you as yet, but we will call him in the next day or two & know he will be glad to go along as he has been talking about going all summer.

We had a card from Lydia last week, says she is getting along. O.K. and would like to see us. Said she had only heard from you once this summer.

[page 3]
I’ll bet she’ll be glad to go along too. Charlie Hoff and June were over one night last week and we talked about Canada and what a good time we all had. Charles came to work today and told me he and June were going to go up to Jacks for a week but when I told him you were leaving Sept. 13th. I think he changed his mind. Ruth says to tell you we are being entertained by the dog next door barking and Jean across the street going through one of her tantrums if you know what I mean.

[page 4]
You guys should go into the building business if you got that “Guest House” finished already did you have some help?

How would you like to bring us a couple of qt. bottles of that good “Maple Leaf Maple Syrup” I sure would appreciate it if you could. We’ll pay you for it when you get here.

I also think you better let me take your car down to the shop and have the power glide trans. overhauld before you head for home. Well Im about out of new so will close for now See you soon H.O. & Ruth

August 22, ’61

Dear Dick and Dad:-

Just a line to let you know we are among the living. The weather here has been so cold it seems like fall instead of summer, I imagine your weather has been unusually cold to. How is the guest house progressing? Or is it a “Bomb Shelter”.

Edw. Shepard was down last week for a couple to days, he seem to be O.K. says he is so busy cutting his grass that he hasn’t had time to go anywhere. He drove down in his Chev. Corvair, he bought it from a private owner and still has his Buick which he is trying to sell. He said if he gets it sold he may go up to your place, but don’t hold your breath.

[page 2]
cars are hard to sell especially a big car such as a Buick. He’ll probably have to give it away. He likes his Corsair just fine. It seems like I always have to mess him up some how or another when he is here. Last time Ruth had to go away and left “Strogenoff” for me to serve. Well I served it all right but I forgot the rice. I thought it tasted funny but didn’t know what was wrong and Edw. didn’t know any better than I did, so we just ate it as it.

Well this time I took it upon myself to turn his bed down and remove the spred. I didn’t know Ruth had taken the pillow cases off to wash and she didn’t check me so Edw. slept on those

[page 3]
plastic pillow cases. Next morning Ruth noticed what had happened and just about flipped her lid. Edw. said he thought she must have had a lot of starch in her pillow cases. Ruth ask him if they didn’t smell funny and Edw. said yes they did but he thought it was some kind of soap that she was using. We all got a big laugh out of it.

While Edw. was here we all went over to Johnie Gates for a grilled steak cook out. Had a good meal and afterward I showed 2 color movie films that I borrowed from

[page 4]
the Cols. Library, one was “Waterway Holiday” and the other was “Hawaii The Nw 50th Sate”. I borrowed the company projector, we had color, sound and all, just like downtown. Johnnie & Juanita took the kids and his dad on a cruise down the Ohio River to the Mississippi and then back up the Ohio and up the Tenn. River. It took them 10 days and they traveled a distance of 1700 miles all by water. I guess they had a wonderful time.

We got the siding on the north side of our cottage and the pine paneling up on the north wall inside. Would like to get the siding

[page 5]
on the front yet this year. We still haven’t used the new boat very much only got 27 hours on it altogether and I think I had about 18 on it when you and Dad were with us that Sunday. Last weekend was a dandy the wind blowed from the time we got there till we left on Sunday night. I didn’t even take the cover off. Mary Michell invited Ruth and I over for supper Sunday evening, She has the cottage just east of Leobluns[?] “Red Brick” She really had a meal fried chicken, sweet corn, browned potatoes and

[page 6]
home made bread just hot out of the oven. I ate till it ran out my ears. I might just add here that her bread was good but not as good as yours. She is a widow, her daughter and two children live with her in Cleveland. You should meet her I know you would like her and have a lot of fun with her. She was born in Scotland and still has some of the Scotch habits. Well I’ve rambled on enough here so guess I’ll have to sign off for now.

We received a letter from Lois the other day saying they had bought an old house 150 years old and on 12 acres of land [this would be Sugar Hill].

[page 7]
I would just love to see it. She said Evelyn and her husband were going to go up about the 22 or 23 of August and were going to stop here for the kids liquor. You know the good kind we had a drink of.

We have been real busy at the shop, most of the time I’m so tired when I get home I just crap out, no good for anything and I mean anything.

Hope this letter finds you guys O.K. write and let us know what you’re doing.

Love H. O. & Ruth

July 24, 1961

Dear Dick & Dad:-
Just a line to let you know we’re O.K. We took Burch up to the lake with us Sat. and Ruth and he are staying for the week. I’m batching [as in being a bachelor]. We are having a large window put in the north side of the living room at the cottage, taking out the two small one’s and having aluminum siding put on over that old paint job. We thought Burch would be able to help the carpenter a little besides giving him a change of scenery for awhile. We are only going to put the siding on the one side this year hope to finish the job next year. Ruth bought drapery material and took her sewing machine along so she could make the drapes while she was there. Burch is feeling O.K. but says time passes slow. He said staying at the lake brought back memories to him of the time they lived at Baltimore. Believe it or not Ruth got him in shorts.

[page 2]
I received a letter from Lois today, says they are living in a tourist cottage for the time being and that the kids really enjoy the water. Ken went back to Chicago on the 14th and Bill was away in New York State some where. She also said their things from Germany had not arrived yet.

Have you heard anything lately from Rena? I just called Elise to see if she wanted me to write you anything and she said she had a wonderful letter from you and that she tried to answer it, but the words just wouldn’t come. She will try again later and said she and Kate are going to come up as soon as she gets a few detail ironed out. I suppose legal details in regards to his death.

How is the building project coming along and where are you building it? I’m about out of news so will close for now. Love H.O.

P.S. I’ll try to mail you Eastern Star material so be on the look out.

Dear Egghead and Dad:

I know now why you call yourself Egghead, you dated your last letter November 8 and I know you’re not nuts, but it helps a lot ha ha. We will be looking forward to the fruit as I only have about four left. I’ve been eating a lot of them. I’ve had a nice little cold for the last few days and I think a lot of fruit juice is good for a cold. Ruth called Al Maddox today and told him if she wasn’t home for him to set the baskets in the kitchen, so they won’t freeze. It was snowing when we got up this morning and it’s still at it 7:30 PM about 6 inches on the ground now. I took the pictures out of our front living room window at 4:30 PM just to give you an idea how snow looks, look at the drift on the house across the street. It’s up even with their porch floor, our driveway is clean out to about the front of the house from there to the street it’s about 2 feet deep don’t know if I’ll be able to get it out in the morning or not. I borrowed the Polaroid camera from Steve to take a few shots to see if I would like to have one. From the results I don’t believe I’ll buy one they don’t seem to be good sharp pictures. The picture of the group although you won’t be able to tell one person from another was taken last night. Martha Star, Ruth and I had a party for our officers and their husbands. We held it at the Linworth Methodist Church. Ruth and Martha prepared all the food at our homes and then we took it over to the church and serve there. Of course I got in on the dishwashing as did Ken, Martha‘s husband. Ocea Patman and Martha’s mother did their share and as far as I know everything went off well. Our officers presented Martha with a solid brass tray about 14 to 15 inches in diameter and me a metal tray with mahogany finish trimmed with chrome I don’t know what I’ll use it for unless I get a job in a restaurant serving tables.

We haven’t heard anything from K.W. But are looking for him to be here for the holidays. I received a letter from Ben Hott (he is the one that moved to Bayshore Gardens) he says there is a lot of work around Sarasota doing home maintenance, painting and etc. Said the field was wide open, in other words a handyman or jack of all trades, he said he was going to look out for me, maybe he’s got something in that kind of work. What do you think? He said he made $95 one week doing that kind of work. I would have to have a truck, ladders, spray painting outfit, steam cleaner etc. or about $3000 to be fully equipped to handle most of the jobs that would be available. I’m going to write him for more details and information etc.

Have you got your Christmas shopping done? We haven’t even started or even bought our cards yet. Ruth has been busy with Job’s Daughters and this party we had last night, next week we have a regular meeting Wednesday night and installation of the 1961 officers next Saturday night. By the time we squeeze in the Christmas shopping and all those details it will probably be another nightmare for the next two weeks. This about winds me up for now so till next time, so long.

Love H. O. & Ruth

Dear Dick and Dad:

How is everything at Safety Harbor? All right I hope. You’ve been home long enough that you should know all the news, good, bad and indifferent. So we’re looking for a nice long letter to bring us up to date.

I suppose you’re wondering how I got along with my first meeting. Well I got along O.K. and we had six candidates to start their degree work. There were a couple of items of business that came up during the business part of the meeting that I didn’t foresee, nevertheless I got along all right. Maybe I’ll be lucky for the whole year.

We had our first frost last night and it was a dandy. I suppose that will be the end of the sweet corn and good homegrown tomatoes. We had a mess of sweetcorn last Saturday night and thought about you while we were eating it.

We had two “stinking” weekends at the lake. Week ago last Sunday we didn’t get out on the lake until 2 PM due to high winds and rough water, but manage to catch 40 nice jumbo perch, and yesterday we didn’t get out period.  The wind was blowing out of the north like a Gail and it rained off and on all day. I hope we get a couple more days as time is getting short. Will probably be pulling the boat

In another couple of weeks.

The grand chapter R.E.M. meetings are being held this week in Columbus, Wednesday and Thursday to be exact. The ladies are being entertain at a brunch Wednesday morning and some other activities are planned for the afternoon then will join for a banquet in the evening. I say that’s ‘rolling out the red carpet’ for the gals. I always enjoy the grand chapter meeting so I hope this will be a good one. Tell dad I’ll see Harry Sark there and will ask him about the Postal Service.

Believe it or not I think Charlie and June are going down to Saint Petersburg for their vacation and will probably arrive there next Monday. Charlie says they are going to look you up. But don’t hold your breath

Ruth took your watch down to Rogers jewelers last week and the repair man told her the main spring was OK and that it had been full of water etc. so she is taking it to Jack Dennick here in Worthington for his examination and will report to you later. Ruth thought the man at Rogers was “full of you know what”.

Ruth hasn’t been downtown since you left and hasn’t got 10 your birthday gift. So we’re enclosing a check and you can apply it to whatever you like, such as a fifth, Maidenform bra, new car, dress, or the grocery bill. Well I’m bout shot my wad so will close for now.

Love H.O. and Ruth

January 17, 1960 Letter Herman Shepard To His Parents

January 17 1960

Dear Dick and Dad:-
I’m a little late in letting you know
we received our fruit OK, it came
last Tuesday and is so good, what
kind of oranges were they? You
can send some of those any time
you want to. I got a kick out of
the three kumquots from our tree.
Somehow I thought they tasted better
than the others, or was it my imagination.
All the fruit arrived in excellent condition
except the kumquots, so as much as I
love them I don’t suppose you should try
to send any more as about
a fourth of them had spoiled.

We had a busy week last week
only one night that didn’t involved
either one or the other of us in Lodge
work or both of us at the same time.

[page 2]
That night we went up to see
Burch the first we had seen of him
since New Years day when we had
him down here. He seems to be doing
a little better about the drinking but
we’re afraid his memory is to far
gone. He just doesn’t remember
anything and has lost all track of
time, he dosen’t know weather its June
or December. He received his first
check on January 5th and we are
trying to help him straight out his affairs
but there just isn’t enough money to
go around all his obligations. Hes
let his affairs get into such a mess
that I don’t have much hope of ever
getting it all straightened out. We are
not going to give him any money
but will see to it that he has food
and clothing or anything else that
is necessary and will try to
visit him as least once a week.

[page 3]
I’m tryingto stave off a cold as of now
Ive got a sore throat and some of
the symptoms of the (BUG) so wish me
luck. Ive taken asprin all day and eat
all the fruit I can hold. We were out
to Ruths folks today and I took a
nap for about three hours out there.

Well we had our first meeting
last Wednesday night and I got by
but believe me there is room for
improvement about the time our year
is over I’ll be about ready to start.

We are suppose to have candidates
at our next meeting Feb 10th so
on that night about 9 PM say a
few extra words for me. We
have our school of instruction next
Sat. night and after that the
inspections start. Ours will be
April 28th say a few more
words on that night to.

[page 4]
Edw. asked if we knew of anybody
that were going to visit you next
month and we told him as far
as we knew there wasn’t anyone,
he said he would call you
before he came down so he
could make arrangement for
you to meet him.

How is the Chevy doing? I see
your old one almost every day
and Jack is real pleased
with it. He had his operation
and is back to work now.
Our work hasn’t been as
heavy this winter as usual
because we have really

[page 5]
had a beautiful winter so far
only one or two minor snows.
Even have the gareage doors open
most of the tome. If we can get
by for the next six weeks I
think will have it made.

We are going to miss going to
Florida this winter but are looking
forward to Canada next
summer. I think well try to
make it early in the season.

Well thats about all from
here for now so write
us a line when you find
the time, and thanks again
for the wonderful fruit
Love
Ruth & H.O.

August 27, 1959 Letter Herman Shepard To His Parents

August 27th 1959
Dear Egghead:-
From the shores of Lake Erie and the banks
of the Scioto:- now how’s that for a
fancy take off? Here I am back at the Salt
Mine. I left Ruth up at the cottage and
will go back myself Sat. afternoon.
today was my first day back to work,
and was it ever hot, the temperature
here and at the lake has been in the
90s for over a week now.
Although it did cool of at
night up at the Harbor. I am
forwarding you a few letters that I
picked up at the Post Office
after I got home yesterday. I
received you letter of the 20th
and also one from the Dept of
Lands and Forest. Thanks for

[page 2]
your trouble. I’m going to write
the dept. and inquire if that lot
could be zoned for commercial
or resort purposes if so what
steps would be necessary. I’m
going to check these items before
I send any money. I suppose
you know all the details about
the purchase as you arranged it
for me so I’ll not go into
those details. Dick Rodenfels just
came back from up there, said
they had a good time camping out
etc..but the fishing wasn’t so good
He was telling me about all
the camping areas that have
been made-since I was
up there. Sounds like

[page 3]
they’re making it too easy for
these campers that like to rough it.
Ruth and I had a good time up at the
lake, caught a lot of fish-blue gills
and perch, have several in the
freezer so we’ll have a mess or
two when you come home. We also
found a new spot to fish for blue
gills out in the lake it just west
of Lakeside along the shore will
have to tell you more about it later
when you come home.

I went out to check on Ruths
mother last night and she recovered
from her attack what every it was
but is still having the pain in the
stomach and back, she’ll probably

[page 4]
go up to Dr. Jenning office for an
examination and xrays next week.
I didn’t get to talk to Unk and Elise
yet but from the sound of your
letter you must of had some trip
to Reception Lake.

As Ruth said I should have
listened to you about that bump on my
cheek bone, you and her both are giving
me the devil, the thing swelled up about
the size of a banty egg and sure
made me look lop sided, but
the doctor wouldn’t lance it for
me while it was infected, he
gave me penacillen shots for the
infection and I have to go back
later to have the source of the trouble
removed. The swelling is all gone
now and I suppose I’ll be going
back to him some time next week.

[page 5]
It not serous as he says its
an enlarged skin (pour?) that became
clogged and couldn’t drain just
filled up and became infected.

We’ve had other troubles also I’ll list a
few. Cost me $57.00 for parts to get
our car fixed. The garbage disposer
almost fell out of the sink (you know
it was leaking) the durn thing rusted
out and I couldn’t get a part for
it in the city of Columbus, had to
order it from California and it
hasn’t come in yet, that’s been
2 weeks ago I ordered the part
and thats going to cost about
$15.00 I got my new teeth and
had to have some of my lowers

[page 6]
ones filled that was $90.00 and
the thing I grip about the most here is
the real estate tax, I just got that
paid for the last half year and
that was $175.85, bought 4 new
tires for the car and so on. You’ll
get a kick out of this one, when I
came home yesterday Ruth had taken
my door key off my key ring and
I didn’t know it until I tried to
unlock the door, so I had to
cut the screen out of the guest
bedroom window and climb
in that way. Boy I’ll bet Ruths
ears were burning about that
time as I was hot to trot.
You know what I mean.

[page 7]
I’m also enclosing a letter
we received from Iva and Roy
Buchanan its self explanatory.
I haven’t seen Burch or talked to
him yet as he wasn’t at work
today and when I checked his time
card he hadnt only been to work
2 day since I started my
vacation on August 13th.
I don’t know what his trouble
is and unless he comes into
the shop I wont have a chance
to check on him until Sat
afternoon after work as I’m
going to be busy tomorrow night
on De Molay work etc.

[page 8]
well its after 11:PM so think
I’ll fix myself a good stiff
drink and go to bed. I’ll
be thinking about you when I
drink it. As you notice
my pen went on the blink
also.
Love to all
Herm

Dear Dick and Dad:-

How is the land of Sunshine? Ill
bet its OK. Weve had about every
kind of weather since we got home,
three different snow storms, a couple
of rains with a little sunshine
mixed in here and there but the
temperature hasn’t been above 50 degrees
at any time and its been down to
20 degrees several nights. Oh! to be
sitting out in your back yard.
At least we have that to remember.

We got all our pictures back
and are going out to Lucile and
Ralphs to show them tonight also to
see Luciles. The roll I had to
start in my camera must have
been older than I thought because
all the pictures are colorless, how
ever the roll I bought at the
Sears store in Tampo is good.

The pictures of your formal
turned out good also the ones
I took by flash out in the

[page 2]
yard turned out fair they should

have been taken about an hour
earlier. Thats what we get for
sight seeing to long. Lu, Ruth and
myself, thats the day we bought the
tree. Hows our tree doing anyhow?
any fruit yet? Ha Ha. Ill bet Dad
could have killed us for bringing
that tree in for him to take care of.

Ruth and I were to Grove City O. F. S.
inspection last night, the first in our
district, ours is the last, on June 17th
so you can be here to see it. I’m
making it a date for you. We
are going to attend as many inspections as
possible, I think you can pick up
a lot of pointers that way besides
meeting the officers of the different
chapters personally.

How does it feel to be alone after
everybody went home. You sure
had a gang for a while including
us. I think it is much better
to have one set at a time but
what else could you do.

[page 3]
We enjoyed visiting with Edna & Hod
and I hope all of us didn’t drive
you nuts. How is the front porch
project progressing? I suppose its
finished by now and you are
using it by now. I can picture
all of us sitting out there reading
the Tampa Tribune, first thing every
morning. Speaking of the paper
all of the Columbus paper are on
strike and have been since the
day after we got home so the only
paper we are getting is the Tribune
once a week. We really miss
the papers as the news you get
on the radio and T.V. only hits the high
spots and don’t give any of the
details besides we miss the
ads etc. Ruth misses the “Funnies”.

Dick Rodenels has been in
MIami sinc I came home and
is still down there for another
week. I hope he is enjoying
the weather. Maybe he’ll
can me when he gets back.

[page 5]
there was a woman customer in the
shop last week who had applied
for a job in the new Wards store at
“St. Peter” when she was there about
Christmas time and she had a call
from them to be there ready for work
this Monday which is tomorrow. She
said the store was to open soon
and that they wanted her to help with
the stock as of now. So that shows
a northerner can get a job in
Florida. She said they had told
her she would be paid $50.00 per
week plus a bonus on sales,
not bad I don’t think.

We haven’t heard any news
from Lyida[Lydia] this past week. Jupe[Jesse?] is
supposed to let us know when
she will be released from the
doctor so we can get her. I’ll try
to keep you informed of any
developments. How is Edna
and Ray making out?
I imagine Edna would like
the south better if she was well.

[page 5]
We bought a bag of tangelos on
our way home they were the large
red ones and so good. They are
all gone and only a few grape
fruit left so I’m hoping maybe
you could send us a basket about
half & half of each. Now Im only
hinting but if you do send some
try to get the grape fruit a little on
the green side as some of the ones
we brought home were soft
and spoiled (only 2) of course we
bought the bag and didn’t inspect
them. Well with that bit of
begging I’ll close for now and
hope this letter finds you both
well & happy

Love H.O. & Ruth.

March 26th 1958 Herman Shepard To His Parents

Worthington Ohio
March 26th 1958
Dear Dick & Dad;

This is the “Old Professor” writing tonight, I’ve been
so busy with this school work and (lodge going)
that I’m way behind. Besides having my regular
night class, I gave a Career Day speech at Eastwood
High School today, and have another one comming
up next Friday at Grove City. After this week, I
have 3 more night sessions at Central, then
I’ll be through, “I hope” I don’t know yet if they
intent to carry on any further classes in
“Auto Mechanics” or not. I like the extra money,
but, with my long hours at work, and my
Lodge commitments, it really doesn’t leave me
much time for myself. If I go on with the
School work, I’ll have to drop some of the
Lodge functions. Well, thats enough griping
about my time.

We had our Father-Son Banquet last Sat.
night and Lee Miller was the guest speaker.
We have again as many to attend as we
expected. I was chairman of the committee
for Blue Lodge and Ruth was chief cook
and bottle washer for he Stars. She about
worked her self to death, went up to the
temple about 12 PM and didn’t get away

[page 2]
till 11 P.M. She and I locked the joint up. Counting
all the kitchen help and the members, they prepared
about 250 meals.

Ruth and I were up to see Lydia last Saturday
evening. We took up the rest of the Bed Room furniture
that she bought from us. She is giving up her job
of cooking and looking after her neighbor lady. She
has lost about 14 lbs and I don’t believe she has
that much to spare. We are going to have her
down here for a few days to give her a rest.
Another woman is supposed to take over for her
the last of this week.

You have been writing in your letters that
you folks were comming north and going
on to Canada this summer. I am quite
concerned about Dad making the trip, you
know he said he was going to “stay put” for
a year, also Doc. Wettercues[?] said he was not in
favor of Dad even making the trip down to Florida.
So Im just wondering, has Dad’s condition
improved enough for him to make such a
trip, or is he just bound and determined to go-
regardless! If the latter is the case, I think
it would be using poor judgement to take
such a chance. Please write and let

me know what ever the case may be. We love
both of you and don’t want you to do the wrong thing
so please give this a good “think” before you make
the trip. If it’s us you want to see we might
make a trip down for a few days after my
school work is over. That’s not a promise but
a thought.

Have you been enjoying and going to your
“Star meetings”? I’m so glad you got to join
the group because you are the type who will
work out very good, they will be good for
you and you for them. I’d like to hear
about your initiation and especially about
your neighbor Esther Smith. Ruth wants to
know if your “Chapter” recesses in the summer.

Has the grass, trees and flowers started to green up
yet? We are still having cold weather here and
some snow every day or two. I hope Bill,
Lois and the kids get to pay you a visit
over Easter. It would be a good chance for
them to see Florida. Bill said he would
like to buy property down there. I think it would
be a good investment for them. I hope they
like your locality. over—

Our business has slowed down a little. Columb
is not as bad as other places-like Detroit,
Cleveland etc. I look for a pickup when the
weather gets warmer. I believe a lot of people
will fix their cars up instead of trading for
new ones, as the case has been for the past
ten years. I’ve about run out of anything
to write, so will sign off for now.
With Love,
Ruth & H.O.

P.S. Ruth is ironing, misses her ironing lady. Ha.Ha.

P.S.S. We have 6 grape fruit left-you keep
up the grape fruit fund and we’ll take care
of your flower fund.
